Reducing Oceanic Pollution
Each day, over 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans, rivers and lakes. Pieces less than five millimeters long, known as microplastics, enter the food and water supply and accumulate in vital organs—particularly the lungs. Some scholars have expressed concern about the efficacy of the current legal system to combat oceanic pollution and have put forward novel international or environmental legal regimes to keep Earth’s waters clean.
The article from The Regulatory Review explores various legal and policy frameworks to tackle ocean pollution, focusing on reducing plastic waste and addressing ocean acidification. It critiques existing international agreements like the Basel Convention, highlighting their limitations, particularly the lack of comprehensive plastic regulation. Additionally, scholars propose restructuring exclusive economic zones and promoting regional cooperation to strengthen oceanic resource management and pollution reduction. The European Union's recent measures and the necessity for multivariate models to reduce carbon emissions and ocean degradation are also discussed.
